Poway Art Camps

The afternoon sessions of art camp provide a great opportunity for students to delve into projects and experiment with new media. Here they have been sketching in Old Poway Park and are transferring their designs to a canvas which they will paint.

Art Camps week 1

Art camps are off to a great start! Quite a few returning artists this week. It is wonderful to see these kids growing up and mastering things they struggled with when so young!

Unfortunately, I left my camera over night in our classroom and someone swiped it along with all my pictures from the 1st week of camp! Silly me.... I never even considered that possibility.

I was able to get a few on our last day using my cell phone. Sorry about the quality, it's not a smart phone!

Art Start upcoming classes

New classes coming up at Old Poway Park in Poway:

 It's All About Color
Perk up your dull winter days creating art with dramatic color!  Young artists will explore color theory and apply it to supercharged projects in a variety of media:  water color, markers, clay, and pastels.  Artist Susan Bainbridge will set each student off to a brilliant start using directed drawing techniques.  Class size will be small to allow individual attention for each student.
Classes meet each Monday February 22 to March 29
    Art Start I for ages 5-6 from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m.
Art Start II for ages 7-14 from 4:00 to 5:15 p.m.
To register and for more info, visit Poway's web site here.

Coming April 5-9 - Art Start Spring Break Art Camp!

Origami!

In my classes I like to introduce students to origami. A documentary, Between the Folds, will be airing on PBS Dec. 8 showing the recent, incredible expansion of origami as an art form. Some of it can be seen on YouTube. I strongly encourage my students and families to see this. The constructions folded from a single sheet of paper will blow you away!

Fish, fish and more fish!

While the clay pots made the previous week were drying, this week's class drew underwater scenes using markers. I encouraged then to look for and add details from their photo references.

Jonathan really succeeded in creating a sense of depth in his drawing.

Alyssa and Emma

Abby and Esther worked as a team.

Matthew accepted a lot of challenges in this, like drawing that gnarly football fish!

Andrew... he hid since he ALWAYS has to make a super goofy face for the camera.

Meaghan concentrates on getting that coral just right!

Drew developed lots of textural patterns.

Fall classes underway

I just started teaching three Poway CFS homeschool classes. This week's lesson dealt with color - using graduated color blends in color pencil to enliven an artwork. We drew birds as a jumping off point. They really got into it!

Art Camp - WK 6 Full Day Group

This week's afternoon class was fairly small. In between the projects I had planned, the kids obsessed on origami.

Kathryn showed us how to fold these modular origami stars.

Laurissa's origami made a nice ring!

Zach was addicted to making the water balloons (ok., who am I fooling? They were water BOMBS!)

Kathryn took the challenge and made several dinosaurs.

Zach models a mask.

Laurissa starts a dinosaur.

Alex and his mosaic flower pot.
