Drawing from Observation

This week, my home school students drew a still life from observation.  I encouraged them to look for shadows and highlights.

Drawing forms

Joelle

Today my students learned about using shading to create the illusion of form in a drawing.  They were introduced to charcoal and conté crayons.  We set up a still life with a strong side light to help them observe the shadows.... really hard for the younger ones to see!

Continuing the Oaxacan Animal theme...

I carted my Oaxacan carvings into my classes again, hoping it would inspire my students to get really creative.  We used Sculpey clay to create little animals.

Oaxacan Animals

My collection of Oaxacan animal carvings is a great subject to work from. Students can easily draw their shapes and then get super creative in creating patterns on them!

Finishing up their watercolor paintings

My students painted in their cathedral designs. They learned about color gradations (always something I push!) and mixing. I loved hearing them talk about how fun and relaxing painting is!

Fall classes at CFS Co-op

Classes are underway with this group of Poway homeschoolers. I was inspired by the Nova program "Building the Great Cathedrals" so I planned my lesson around it. I had the kids design their own cathedrals. Here they are transferring their designs to a sheet of watercolor paper.

Poway Art Camps

The afternoon sessions of art camp provide a great opportunity for students to delve into projects and experiment with new media. Here they have been sketching in Old Poway Park and are transferring their designs to a canvas which they will paint.

Art Camps week 1

Art camps are off to a great start! Quite a few returning artists this week. It is wonderful to see these kids growing up and mastering things they struggled with when so young!

Unfortunately, I left my camera over night in our classroom and someone swiped it along with all my pictures from the 1st week of camp! Silly me.... I never even considered that possibility.

I was able to get a few on our last day using my cell phone. Sorry about the quality, it's not a smart phone!
